Musings on 5 Technologies as we look ahead to the New Year

December 20, 2010 in Top 5 by Scott Pasho

As we all know, technology is advancing ever more quickly, making it difficult to not only keep abreast of the latest developments, but also best leverage them to positively impact our businesses, and our lives. Heading into 2011, let’s take a brief look at some of the ‘Hot Technologies’ that we’re all talking about:

Software as a Service (SaaS), or sometimes referred to as ‘software on demand’, is software deployed over the Internet as either a ‘pay-as-you-go’ or subscription service, or increasingly, as a free offering. SaaS offers the advantages of instant anytime/anywhere accessibility and scalability, along with reliability, and hassle-free use and support that eliminates the need to constantly update end-user PC software.

Top 5 Reasons to Attend SPTech Con 2010

This past week, Snowbound Software exhibited at the SharePoint Tech Conference in Cambridge, MA and we were formally introduced to this juggernaut industry known as SharePoint solution providers. I had the unique pleasure of working the Snowbound booth during the conference and got to spend two glorious days rep-ing our “soon-to-be-released VirtualViewer AJAX integration for SharePoint 2010”, yes that is a mouthful. Just imagine saying that phrase several hundred times a day while wearing an unflattering company button-down and talking to SharePoint fanatics. In the tradition of our newly minted blog I thought I would take the time to compile a brief Top 5 list of reasons to attend SPTechCon 2010.

5 Things I Learned about Business from Jazz

One of my favorite ways to spend leisure time is to listen to classic jazz. The vocalists, the Great American songbook, the horns, piano, drums and strings all combining in harmony to create that truly unforgettable American sound. I was thinking the other day how the things we really enjoy affect other aspects of our lives, and how one might relate a favorite hobby or pastime to their career. So without further adieu, here are five things I learned about business from jazz…

1. Tune in to the melody and beat

1. A .300 average is great performance.

Not an endorsement of striking out 70% of the time, but that every idea or project undertaken will not be a homerun (or even a base hit). The idea is to keep trying and taking your swings – never give up!

2. Read the subtle signs to be prepared

Top 5 Reasons to have a Top 5 List – and not a Top Ten list

Snowbound’s new blog – fun and informative – yes that’s right – both!

Our new blog features the latest in business news pertaining to our industry – viewing and Enterprise Content Management (or, ECM for those who love acronyms). But will be delivered with a whole new approach – with tongue firmly in cheek at times. Oh, sure, we’ll have articles under sections including ‘Best Business Practices’, ‘Hot Technology’ (maybe we can feature swimsuits made with nanotechnology here, hmmm…) and ‘Tips and Tricks’, which isn’t authored by a magician by the way. Also, a new section titled ‘Top 5’ will be highlighted as well featuring a variety of lists such as best products, best technology and most interesting new announcements.   We’re going with ‘Top 5’ for a couple of reasons; it’s frequently too difficult to come up with ten items for a list, and people seem to gravitate towards articles featuring lists.
