Recent crises spur corporate records management interests

Businesses are increasing their focus on records management practices to avoid possible legal complications.Recent corporate disasters have resurrected businesses’ interests in the risks of poor information and records management, according to a recent survey by the Association for Information and Image Management.

The study, which was underwritten by EMC, ASG and Iron Mountain, found senior managers in 57 percent of organizations are more conscious of their records management practices in light of the recent disasters, such as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the Toyota recalls, the banking crisis and high-profile government email leaks.

According to the AIIM study, 80 percent of organizations have given increased priority to records management over the last two years, and over half of the organizations surveyed plan to increase spending on records management.

MetaVis launches Cloud Classifier for SharePoint 2010

Cloud Classifier gives SharePoint users more control over tagging and classifying documents.SharePoint solutions software developer MetaVis Technologies recently announced the launch of its Cloud Classifier for Microsoft SharePoint 2010, a product aimed at enabling users to tag and classify multiple items directly from the SharePoint user interface.

According to MetaVis, by directly integrating in SharePoint Web Interface, Cloud Classifier appears in the SharePoint toolbar, giving users more control over adding the appropriate metadata to documents.

SharePoint 2010 already provides tagging and classification technology, but is limited to individual items. Cloud Classifier allows users to select multiple documents from SharePoint sites, libraries, lists or search results and classify in bulk.

With a refocused team behind it, EMC''s ECM solution Documentum will likely take off in 2011.Throughout 2010, the ECM world has been focused on Open Text and Microsoft SharePoint, as the solutions most likely to positively impact adopting companies. However, earlier this year, EMC announced its solution, Documentum, will be refocused to leverage the growth of cloud computing in the enterprise IT world.

According to IT Business Edge, EMC has been fairly quiet since the announcement earlier this summer. But the company plans to aggressively push its new cloud-based version of Documentum in 2011.
